THAI YOGA MASSAGE

from Karen M.
Television Technical Director and Yoga Teacher

Recently I enjoyed my first thai yoga massage with Elizabeth. Wow! I didn't know how much I would enjoy a massage where I wasn't lying down the entire time. Well it was fantastic. I left the massage feeling loose & relaxed. This was a nice change from how I walked into the massage room. I was sure no one could get through the chunks of tension in my body. I can't wait for my next one. Thai yoga massage will be a regular part of caring for my self.

My Thai Yoga Massage with Elizabeth is hard to describe in words. She knew exactly when and how to release certain areas within my body. Elizabeth makes you feel safe and relaxed throughout the entire time. The most beautiful thing with the Thai Yoga Massage is you still feel it within you days after. It's a wonderful experience that I recommend to others.

YOGA

from Mary N., age 49

You've been a blessing to me as a yoga instructor! I will carry with me your deep respect for people and the honor your give our spiritual selves that must dwell in these stiff and sometimes pained bodies of ours.

From the moment I met Elizabeth as I arrived for her class, I knew she was someone special. She has a way of connecting with people that is quite remarkable. First, to describe her personality—she is open, caring, attentive to her students, and possesses a true generosity of spirit. She also has an infectious smile and is fun! Second, her teaching style—she is knowledgeable, competent, easy to understand, respectful of her students, and is deeply committed to teaching (and to her own learning). It is a joy to be in her class. I look forward to it each week.

Elizabeth's ability to use words to describe a pose was the first time I was able to connect the posture with my mind and body. I was unable to really connect breath, mind, and body by watching someone do the pose in the front of the room. I found myself trying to mirror them. Elizabeth's ability to describe (without providing an overload of information) was a breakthrough for me.

This is the first class that I was able to sit back and not compare, but understand where I was in that posture at that time. It also is very helpful that she watches what her students are doing and provides feedback. I can remember the first class with her...I was in a posture and she stopped by and lightly touched my middle back and said, "you need to breathe into this area." It was the first time that I was able to connect my breath with my body.

For me, the simplicity of her words, the fact that she does not expect us to copy her, that she watches us do the postures instead of doing them with us...has helped me grow. Since my first class with her I have been practicing every day in some way (meditation, practicing breathing into my middle back or just at the end of the day sitting on my deck and honestly answering the question "how am I today"—it is hard to answer this honestly in class).

Her teaching style impressed me so much that I went to my boss and spent a month requesting early release for Thursdays so I could make to her class each week.

I’ve been taking yoga classes with Elizabeth Miller for over a year.  I attended my first class with a friend, and only then after much arm-twisting.  I honestly expected to attend a class or two and then drop it, as I’ve done with any other group exercise class I’ve tried. To my surprise, and though my friend has since dropped, I’ve stuck with it and enjoyed it.

I attribute my continuing interest in the class to Elizabeth’s teaching.  Our class is composed of people of different ages and fitness levels, and all have different goals.  Many just want to improve their physical health, working out kinked muscles or gaining greater flexibility.  Some are also interested in breathing exercises or meditation, and Elizabeth accommodates all of us masterfully.  She knows our bodies, perhaps better than we do ourselves, and knows what we can and cannot do.  She is tough but fair, setting higher standards for us than we would ourselves but always warning individuals when something may be too strenuous and hence unbeneficial for them.

Each class is catered to the individuals present that night, and within each class (especially the intermediate class) she gives various options with different levels of difficulty, all the while reminding us that the goal is to know our body better rather than set unrealistic physical challenges for ourselves.  In the last year, my general health has improved significantly, and the stress I carried in my shoulders and back has virtually disappeared.  I look forward to yoga class, and I enjoy moving quietly in unison with people who are all seeking to breathe easier and live better.

Whether Elizabeth is urging me to stay squatting in the “chair” pose longer or reading us a passage from Thomas Merton or a famous Hindu poet, I feel relaxed in her studio and with her instruction.  She is a model teacher.

from Carol Z.

I started yoga classes at the beginning of this year, and I have two teachers with very different styles. One thing that is most interesting to me is how different they are, and that is an aspect that I enjoy most about the classes. Elizabeth focuses on breathing and movement with breath, which really makes me concentrate on how everything in the body works together. I like the fact that there is usually a new pose with each class, and the emphasis on the fact this is OUR practice and that we need to be aware of how our bodies react to a pose or movement. Also interesting to me is how the class always begins with each of us talking about how we are at that particular time, physical and mental, and how that impacts our practice.

I look forward to many years of yoga practice to come, in part because of my experience with Elizabeth.
